On Our Own Terms

In the wake of the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organisation Supreme Court decision, which stripped abortion of its constitutional protection in the United States, a quiet revolution begins.

On Our Own Terms is a powerful documentary that uses oral history to capture the resilience, ingenuity, and defiance of 31 frontline activists, providers, and community leaders fighting to preserve reproductive rights in a post-Roe America.

Through intimate interviews — recorded in living rooms, community centres and virtual spaces, the film weaves together a tapestry of resistance. From training non-medical providers and integrating abortion into primary care, to pioneering telemedicine and self-managed care, these narrators share insights, wisdom and inspiration. Their stories illuminate efforts to destigmatise abortion, support faith communities, and advocate for legal reform.

As a crisis deepens, so does innovation. What emerges is not just an American chronicle, but globally relevant lessons for reproductive justice.

On Our Own Terms draws from Indigenous oral tradition as an decolonizing methodology of knowledge seeking — one that reclaims narrative and could play a vital role in shaping the future.
